Cloud Chaser

Las Vegas, Nevada

Cloud chaser is a contemporary home in the foothills outside of Las Vegas. While it offers expansive views of the entire Las Vegas Valley, including the entire Vegas Strip, mountains, desert, and surrounding communities, there were several challenges to maximize these potential views. The entry to the residence is oriented and centered to frame the entire Strip through sliding glass doors and walls. Circulation was developed carefully around this entry moment; the visitor first encounters a meandering boulder path that takes them across the front yard, a gated courtyard complete with a specimen tree and water feature, and a floating trellis structure that frames an outdoor living space adjacent to the pool, capturing reflections from the Strip at night.

Aligning this entry sequence to the Strip required rotating the main centerline of the building 30° off the centerline of the lot. The unusual angles created between the entry sequence and the setback lines produced ample opportunities for interesting architectural moments without sacrificing any of the program.

The materials were heavily inspired by the rocks found on site. The community is unique in that there are dozens of ~50' "rockery" retaining walls comprised of stacked, oversized boulders.

The other primary materials are glass, metal and raked concrete. The combination creates an open, contemporary vibe that feels as though it was largely assembled by materials found directly on site.
